Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines through "natural" search results. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

Much has been written about optimizing a website. Search engine optimization is a critical element in gaining a high ranking of your website. Ranking of your website relates to what page of a search results your page will appear. The highest ranking would, of course, show you site on the first page of a search result. Being on the first page gives you great exposure at no advertising cost to you. Most internet surfers will not go much beyond the second or third page of a search result.

Optimizing for the Google search engine is the standard for SEO. If a website is optimized for Google it will be well optimized for the other search engines. Many web master will turn to SEO firms to have their sites optimized. If you chose to use an SEO firm for your optimization, be careful of the firm you chose. You can also find software, on the internet, that can analyze  your website and provide information as to optimization improvements.

Part of the optimization process is the HTML (HyperText Markup Language) coding of your site. In order to handle this coding you will need to become familiar with HTML. Once again, search the internet to find software to assist you with HTML.
